Meet the Artist

Kathy Bean Gaffney

Rocks have been a big part of my life since 1997. That’s the year my parents retired and spent their first winter in Quartsite, Arizona.  I had lived in California for 33 years, and this was a wonderful place to take my kids for vacation.  I have two daughters and one son. My daughter Jennifer, took to rock hunting with her grandma and when I moved back to Texas in June of 2014 I had 22 banana boxes full of her rocks! One year I was visiting the Quail Mountain cafe in Quartsite with my parents, and I saw a landscape painted on a large rock. My immediate thought was… "I could do that".  Having so many rocks collected, it seemed fitting as I

relocated to Texas that I would leave painted rocks with my friends in California to remember me by. In a nutshell… that's how my painting on rocks got started.  My first landscape was of Quartsite, for my parents 60th wedding anniversary! After the move, and spending a year and a half closing two homes and getting all of us settled in a new home, I found myself painting again. Only this time, I’m pressing in for more challenging pictures.  When the door opened for me to show my rocks at Tremont Gallery, in Galveston on October 10th, Solid Rock Creations was born and now I have a way to share my artistic talent with the world!

FAQ's

All designs are created with acrylic paint.
Yes. Each rock is sprayed 3 times with a matte or gloss coating. This coating ensures that your rock will be long-lasting and protected even in the outdoor elements.
Most of the rocks that I have right now were collected in Quartsite, Arizona, on my cousins deer preserve north of San Antonio, Texas. There are also several rock landscaping companies that I use when purchasing river rocks and larger flat stone pieces.
If you have a special rock that you would like to use, you can do so. You will need to make arrangements for shipping both ways.
I love God's creation and am mostly inspired by nature. I have also started a file of possible future rocks from the internet and friends who send me pictures.
I'm all about detail and the amount of time depends on the subject matter and size of the rock.. My seascapes are averaging 2 to 3 days with 10-15 hours per rock.
At this time, I am not creating rocks with paintings of people.
No two rocks are the same. I will give you a "not to exceed" price when we chat about your specific rock.
